Business Area B. Agriculture and the Food Chain:  support and develop British farming and encourage sustainable food production  help to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the whole food chain (primary production to consumers) to ensure a secure, environmentally sustainable and healthy supply of food with improved standards of animal welfare  increase resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts of the whole food supply chain  increase socio-economic benefits of food production and consumption to promote availability and uptake of quality healthy food  support enforcement of labelling legislation principally on non-safety issues, food compositional standards and co-ordination of food labelling policy across Government.  ensure crops, livestock and food are produced and sold sustainably and the agriculture, horticulture, livestock industries and food sector are profitable and adaptable  ensure the UK meets its legal obligations for organic production, to support the UK organic farming industry to deliver benefits for the environment, the rural economy and the consumer  encourage consumption and domestic production of fruit and vegetables by measures including tackling market failures and barriers to structural change.
