Class Coverage. Teachers, including but not limited to classroom teachers, special area teachers, and clinicians, shall not be required to take another teacher’s classes except in an emergency. Examples of an emergency are the following: a sudden illness of a teacher during the school day, or awaiting the arrival of an obtained substitute, and other situations mutually accepted by the teacher and the principal.

Class Coverage. Teachers may be used to cover classes for absent teachers. Such coverage should not be excessive.
Class Coverage. 23.17.1 In emergencies and in cases when substitute service cannot be obtained for an absent Teacher, other Teachers may be required to provide class coverage. 23.17.2 If a Teacher notifies the principal or his designee less than twenty-four (24) hours before the start of the Teacher’s tour of duty that he/she will be absent, that shall constitute an emergency. In such cases, the principal will make a concerted effort to find a substitute. 23.17.3 In emergency situations, Teachers in secondary schools may be required to cover classes on a per-period rotation basis. On the elementary level, Teachers may be required to accept other students in their classrooms for instruction, with consideration given to class size, equitable distribution and the grade levels of the students involved. 23.17.4 The Supervisor and the SCAC shall jointly develop procedures for assigning class coverage on a voluntary basis, except as provided below. 23.17.5 When a building Supervisor is unable to provide substitute services for an absent Teacher during the instructional day, the Supervisor may require teachers to provide coverage for the absent Teacher’s students. When a Teacher is required to provide class coverage for students, the Teacher shall be compensated in accordance with the following sections:

A secondary principal (or her or his designee) may assign secondary employees who offer to cover classes for employees who are required to be absent from class as authorized by the building administrator. In the event no employees volunteer to cover classes, and after all reasonable good faith efforts to obtain a guest employee have failed, then the principal or designee may require an employee to cover a class, provided, no employee may be required to cover a class again unless every other employee with the same preparation time has also been required to cover a class as often as the employee who is being required to cover a class again. A rotation schedule should be created and posted at each building. 2. Secondary employees assigned to cover classes will receive notice of the assignment 24 hours in advance, except in cases of emergency, and payment shall be made at each employee’s per diem, at an hourly rate of one day of the employee’s base contract divided by 7.5 hours, for each period covered. For the purpose of computing compensation, covering a class for 25 minutes or more shall be considered as covering the class for a full period. For the purpose of computing compensation, class periods of 50 to 60 minutes shall be considered as 1.0 hours in length. An emergency for the purpose of this section will be defined as a situation in which the absent employee has provided less than 24 hours’ advance notice to the substitute office and the school, and in such situations the employee assigned to cover the class will be given notice as much in advance as possible. 3. When an elementary classroom does not have an assigned substitute (guest teacher), an elementary principal (or designee) may assign elementary classroom teachers or specialists to cover a classroom on a rotating basis created and posted at each building. Elementary class coverage will be reimbursed at per diem for any missed planning period and at $35.00 per hour for every hour after that. Class coverage will be documented on an extra pay time sheet. This documentation will reflect the time worked beyond the contracted day to complete regularly assigned duties equal to the amount of time spent covering a classroom. Occasionally, employees on special assignment may also be assigned to provide elementary classroom coverage and will be compensated as stated above. 4. Class Coverage. It is an administrative responsibility to cover all scheduled classes. 8-10-1 During the first month of each school year, the SLT, in consultation with the department chairs at the secondary level or grade level chairs at the elementary level, shall develop a written contingency plan for class coverage occasioned by a shortfall of substitute teachers. Individuals must possess the appropriate teaching credentials to be considered for class coverage. Such plan shall include the procedure for enabling teachers to invoke Article 32-6.
Class Coverage. 1. A principal or his/her designee may request employees to cover classes in cases of emergency when arrangements for a regular substitute cannot be made, either because of the time factor or the unavailability of a qualified substitute. Class Coverage. If an administrator assigns a bargaining unit member to cover another bargaining unit member's class, the covering bargaining unit member shall be paid at a rate per hour or class period. That rate shall be $24.25 effective July 1, 2018, and $24.98 effective July 1, 2019 and $25.73 effective July 1, 2020. The principal will keep a record of times when each bargaining unit member has accepted such teaching responsibilities. Payment shall be made once a year, at the June 20 pay. Any bargaining unit member may have the right to refuse such request without recrimination.
Class Coverage. Regularly scheduled part-time employees are eligible for class coverage assignments pursuant to Article 7 of the Agreement concerning full-time employees provided that such assignments do not conflict in whole or in part with their part-time responsibilities. Such coverage shall not be calculated for any purpose including but not limited to determination of the l7.5 hour threshold for receiving pro rata benefits and seniority credit.
