Detective Assignment. The assignment will be rotational within the department subject to the following:
Detective Assignment. A. All vacancies in the position of Police Officer shall be entry level positions and may be filled by the University as it deems proper. All vacancies for the detective assignment shall be filled by from among the officers who have completed their initial probationary period.
B. Where assignment as a detective is defined as temporary, the assignment will normally be for a specific length of time, not to exceed twenty-four (24) months, as stipulated in the posting. Should exigent circumstances exist that would necessitate a detective's assignment being extended or shortened, such action will require mutual agreement between management and the Lodge. Temporary assignments to investigations for shorter periods of time may be made as necessary. Where management determines that an emergency situation exists and resources need to be redeployed to the detective bureau, an officer may be reassigned without following the posting process. This reassignment would not exceed ninety (90) days. The number of detective assignments available will be determined by management. Assignment to detective position will be made using the following process: The vacancy will be announced for a minimum of ten (10) days and interested candidates will submit letters of interest to the detective sergeant. Applicants will be interviewed by a three (3) member panel. The panel will recommend the candidate to the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police will make the final determination. In selecting an officer for a detective assignment, applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Prior assignment to a detective position will not preclude an officer from seeking another assignment; however, preference will be given to qualified officers who have not previously served as a detective. Management reserves the right to assign officer(s) to a detective's assignment in the event that no one applies when a vacancy is posted. Management may remove an officer from a temporary detective assignment prior to the specified end date. The removal is not subject to the grievance provision of the Agreement. Officers assigned as a detective will receive a premium of $0.50 per hour added to their base pay for the duration of the assignment. Once the detective assignment has ended, the officer will no longer be entitled to the premium pay.
Detective Assignment. Employees assigned to the Detective Bureau shall receive assignment pay equal to 8.25% of their base salary.
Detective Assignment. Regular and temporary assignments to the Detective Bureau shall be made at the discretion of the Chief of Police. There will be at least one regular assignment to the Detective Bureau from sworn peace officers in the bargaining unit. Any such assignments will be filled before any temporary assignments are made. Ordinarily, temporary assignments will be made from sworn peace officers in the bargaining unit. Under normal circumstances, Regular Assignments to the Detective Bureau will be for three years, and may be renewed by the Chief of Police for additional two (2) years intervals. Removal from a regular assignment before the completion of an interval will be for cause. Temporary assignments to the Detective Bureau can be terminated at any time at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Temporary assignments to the Detective Bureau are defined as assignments of less than six (6) consecutive months in duration. Temporarily assigned personnel to the Detective Bureau will be made aware of the expected duration of the assignment when assigned. When practical, as determined by the Chief of Police, temporary assignments to the Detective Bureau will be made to different personnel so as to further growth in investigatory ability.
Detective Assignment. The assignment of an officer to the position of detective is made in order to provide for greater experience and opportunity for increased responsibilities to more members of the department. This assignment is not considered a promotion. Compensation shall be based upon the wage scale for detective as defined in this agreement. Officers so assigned would retain their step placement in the wage scale and move to the appropriate classification. (Example: pay grade 14-IX would then move to 15-IX for the assignment.) Periodic wage adjustments and step increases would be in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. At the conclusion of the assignment the officer would retain the wage scale of the detective’s position and remain at that pay grade until such time that the pay classification steps of the patrol officer equals the detective’s pay grade. This provision will not apply to an officer who is assigned to detective for six (6) months or less. It is intended that the assignment to detective would be for no less than two (2) years. It is recognized that there is a large operational need for a detective, and as such, the position should remain filled unless there is an operational need to reassign the officer.
Detective Assignment. The Chief of Police may appoint Police Officers and Sergeants to assignment as Detective. Those so appointed shall serve at the pleasure of the Chief of Police and shall not gain any property interest in the assignment. Those assigned as Detective shall be paid a premium pay of five percent (5%) of base salary per month.

Any employee who is covered by this Agreement who is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division shall be paid five percent (5%) of his/her base hourly rate while assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. Any employee who is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and who is also paid five percent (5%) based on his/her service in another Special Assignment category under this Agreement, (i.e., corporal) shall not forfeit his/her other specialty assignment pay in order to also access his/her Detective Assignment pay.

The assigned employee will receive additional compensation of 5% of the base hourly rate during the term of the assignment. Removal from assignment is not subject to grievance.
