Disability Retirement. Unit members who are disabled shall apply for and begin disability retirement status with the State Teachers’ Retirement System at the earliest possible time. Sick leave may not be used as an alternative to disability retirement benefits. Unit members who are approved for STRS disability retirement shall choose one of the following two options for their remaining sick leave, if any: A. Take severance pay pursuant to Article 15. B. Be paid the difference between the daily rate the retiree receives under STRS disability and the unit member’s daily rate at the time of retirement from the District. Such payment shall be made for the number of days the retiree had remaining on the books at the time of retirement, and shall be made in a lump sum payment within thirty (30) days of the submission of proof of retirement. Such payment shall eliminate all of the unit member’s remaining sick leave.
