Management of Disturbed Behaviour. a. You must have a written policy and guidelines for management of disturbed behaviour. b. The policy referred to in clause D16.6(a) shall include (but is not limited to): i. mechanisms to ensure the causes of a Resident’s verbal or physical aggression are investigated and steps taken wherever possible to alleviate the problem; ii. strategies for the provision of a low stimulus environment, for example, providing a specified room (other than a Resident’s bedroom); iii. principles of protection of all Residents and others (visitors and staff) in the Unit; iv. mechanisms to ensure any form of restraint to modify Residents’ behaviour are used as a last resort in the least restrictive way possible and that they comply with the Approved Service Standard relating to restraint minimisation; v. the orientation programme for newly engaged staff referred to in clause D17.9(a) and a policy for ongoing learning that provides them with an understanding of the skills necessary to deal with situations where a Resident shows signs of disturbed behaviour; vi. where appropriate, strategies for the provision of a sound protected environment.
