Relative Permittivity Sample Clauses

Relative Permittivity.Β Electrical permittivity describes the capacity of ice (or any other material) to store an electrical charge. The permittivity is an important part of the propagating velocity of waves given by (Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxxx, 2005): √(π—Œ)[(1+𝑃2)+1] Equation 1 Where c is the speed of light (3Γ—108 ms-1), Ι› is permittivity and P is the loss factor defined by P=σωΡ, where Ξ΅ is electric conductivity and Ο‰ is the angular frequency (equal to 2Ο€Ζ’, where Ζ’ is the frequency of the electromagnetic waves emitted by the antenna, Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxxx 2005). The permittivity (Ι›, Fm-1) is often related to permittivity in vacuum (Ι›0, 8.854 Γ— 10-12 Fm-1) by this formula (Xxxxxx, 2007): π‘Ÿ πœ€ = π—Œ π—Œ0 Equation 2 Ι›r is referred to as the relative permeability, commonly called the dielectric constant (Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxxx 2005). Since the electric conductivity in ice is very low and the frequency is not fixed we use a simplified version of equation 1, given by the speed of light and the relative permittivity (Ι›r, equation 1) in the equation (Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxxx, 2001): πœ€π‘Ÿ = (𝑐) ↔ 𝑉 = Equation 3 𝑣 βˆšπ—Œr For ice, the relative permittivity is relatively low (~3) in comparison to that of water (80, Table 2). Ice with high water content will therefore affect the penetrating wave. The relative permittivity of the ice itself will be affected by crystal orientation, density and purity, all to a different extent.
