SWITCHBACK STANDARDS. A switchback is defined as a curved segment of road between a beginning and end of the same curve, where the change of traffic travel direction is greater than 90 degrees. Purchaser shall follow these standards for switchbacks: Maximum adverse grades for switchbacks is 10%. Maximum favorable grades for switchbacks is 12%. Maximum transition grades entering and leaving switchbacks is a 5% grade change. Transition grades required to meet switchback grade limitations must be constructed on the tangents preceding and departing from the switchbacks.
