Common use of Temporary Work Permits Clause in Contracts

Temporary Work Permits. The Union may, in its discretion, issue temporary work permits to non-members who may then be employed as Mates by the Employer; the Union shall not discriminate in the issuance of temporary work permits, and the Union may accept and consider the applications of such Deck Officers for membership in the Union in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement relating to Union Recognition and Security, Rule 3. A Mate working under such a temporary work permit shall be considered a Union member for purpose of Section 3.1 of this Agreement. A temporary work permit issued under this rule is valid for one (1) quarter and may be renewed upon review, and such renewal shall not be unreasonably withheld. After initial issuance of a permit, Temporary Mates must demonstrate intent and progress toward establishing Seniority under Rule 20.1. A. Deck Officers whose name appears on the seniority list, and have worked in excess of ninety (90) days as a temporary Mate under the MM&P contract must apply for membership, paying the appropriate initiation fees and monthly dues to remain in good standing. Such Deck Officers who are not members in good standing will have their names removed from the active seniority list and may, upon review, be given a new preliminary Mate’s seniority date as per Subsection 20.6 (A).
