It continues to be one of the few seaports with access to interior Alaska. Although the population remains low, the number of residents has more than tripled since 1970 to the current level of 4,700 people (Figure 3-2). In summer the population increases to around 9,000, primarily due to recreational and sport fishing opportunities (pers. comm., ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Chamber of Commerce, 1995).
