REFUSE, RECYCLING AND YARD WASTE COLLECTION SERVICES UNINCORPORATED SANTA CRUZ COUNTY The County of Santa ▇▇▇▇ contracts with Waste Management of Santa Cruz County to provide refuse collection and a number of related services including recycling and yard waste collection for residents and businesses in the unincorporated areas of the county. The term of the current agreement is about to expire and the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, on February 28,2006, decided to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to receive proposals from various vendors to provide these services, rather than renew the current agreement with Waste Management. Because the RFP process may take up to 18 months, the Board of Supervisors will consider a short-term extension of the current agreement with Waste Management to ensure continued service during this interim period. Waste Management has requested an increase in their current rates of 19.8% for this interim period, to reflect their current cost of service stemming higher fuel prices, higher business costs, and increased disposal fees. Prior to making a decision on the short-term contract extension and the requested rate increase, the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, March 28,2006, at am, to receive comments from all interested parties.
