Deaf is a broad term that generally describes people who have a severe to profound hearing loss. Deaf individuals may communicate by American Sign Language (ASL), another form of signed language, lip-reading, English (written or spoken), or any other method of communication. They may use a combination of Sign Language Interpreters, hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and other specialized technology.
Deaf means a person whose average loss in the speech frequencies (500-2000 Hertz) in the better ear is 82 decibels, A.S.A., or worse.
