Spurious correlation definition

Spurious correlation means an apparent, although false, association between two (or more) variables caused by some other variable.

Examples of Spurious correlation in a sentence

  • Spurious correlation and the fallacy of the ratio standard revisited.

  • Spurious correlation denotes apparent high correlation between time series variables that is explained by a common time trend rather than by an actual ‘causal’ link between the variables.

  • Therefore, in making causal inferences, it is important to avoid spurious correlation.16 Spurious correlation arises when two variables are closely related but bear no causal relationship because they are both caused by a third, unexamined variable.

  • Spurious correlation can often be resolved by differencing the17 variables, however testing for its presence (denoted by the existence of a18 ‘unit root’, i.e. the observed variable being correlated with its lagged value19 with a slope of 1) requires appropriate statistical testing which is not always20 conclusive if root values are close to 1.

  • Spurious correlation can be generated when the unobserved characteristics of commercial FM stations that influence economic performance are correlated with the presence of LPFM stations.

  • Spurious correlation might occur due to global or local (dyadic) influences.

  • It shows the amount of teachers which have a specific level of educational attainment.

  • Spurious correlation refers to a finding of correlation between two variables even though no causal relationship links the two.

  • Spurious correlation occurs when two series seem to be correlated but in fact they are not.

  • Spurious correlation is largely controlled by the contemporaneous effect.
