Trophic state definition

Trophic state means a classification of the productiv- ity of a lake ecosystem. Lake productivity depends on the amount of biologically available nutrients in water and sedi- ments and may be based on total phosphorus (TP). Secchi depth and chlorophyll-a measurements may be used to improve the trophic state classification of a lake. Trophic states used in this rule include, from least to most nutrient rich, ultra-oligotrophic, oligotrophic, lower mesotrophic, upper mesotrophic, and eutrophic.
