Class and individual Sample Clauses

Class and individual. An individual item that exists at a particular time in a particular place can be a member of any of the classes listed in Clause A.5.1. Hence it can be said that:  part serial number 12/1234 is a metal thing;  part serial number 12/1234 is a pipe;  part serial number 12/1234 has a density of 7.93 103 kg m-3, which is between 7.75 and 8.05 103 kg m-3  part serial number 12/1234 is steel  part serial number 12/1234 is stainless steel  part serial number 12/1234 is 316 stainless steel  part serial number 12/1234 is to specification X2CrNiMoN17-12-2 (EN 10216-5)  part serial number 12/1234 is to specification seamless pipe X2CrNiMoN17-12-2, NPS 2 inch SCH 80  part serial number 12/1234 is to specification seamless pipe X2CrNiMoN17-12-2, NPS 2 inch SCH 80, manufactured by Xxxx Xxxxxx and Co. In each case the relationship between part serial number 12/1234 and the class is membership because part serial number 12/1234 meets the criterion for inclusion. In a natural language sentence, the terms “is”, “is a” or “ are to specification” is used to express this. Hence each of the classes listed in A5.2 is a class that has individual items as members. In ISO 15926-2, such classes are members of a class of individual. This distinguishes these classes from classes that have other classes as members. It is tempting to say “X2CrNiMoN17-12-2 is a stainless steel” or “X2CrNiMoN17-12-2 is a 316 stainless steel”. However in this case the relationship “is a” is not membership but subclass. X2CrNiMoN17-12-2 is a member of the set of subclasses of stainless steel. Hence we can say “X2CrNiMoN17-12-2 is a class of stainless steel”, where “is a” means membership. This is illustrated in the following figure. individual item class of individual subclass of subclass of stainless steel class of stainless steel member of subclass of member of member of member of 316 stainless steel member of subclass of part serial number member of Figure 1 — Stainless steel and class of stainless steel
