CONTEXTUAL ENTITIES Sample Clauses

CONTEXTUAL ENTITIES. Since, an epigraphic monument is always a text-bearing object, from an owner's marking on an everyday artifact to the letters declaring the date of a building, a distinction could be made between its function and the content of the accompanying text. Thus, a grave marker normally declares the defunct' names but it could have his/her portrait (as a sculpture) as well. Traditionally, epigraphers have paid more attention to the text than to the graphic/visual/artistic side of this dual nature, which was often summarily and subjectively described. Nowaday, it is almost mandatory to add pictures and/or drawings of the described monuments, and to provide additional data to identify those images, state their date, source and author. Very often this “additional” pictorial material (which is very abundant in the databases of the EAGLE Content Providers and which will be a substantial part of the material ingested to Europeana) is related to monuments or other objects not directly bearing an inscription, and therefore those objects have been named “contextual entitities”.
