Educational Leave of Absence (Teachers. An Educational leave is a leave from work for a reason which is acceptable to the School Association and for a length of time not to exceed one school year. The request will come to the School Association via the principal and the Program Committee and will be decided on a case by case basis. Requests will not be unreasonably denied. Teachers may request a leave of absence for the purpose of study and or research or the pursuit of a degree relevant to their teaching positions. For the one-year leave the School Association will continue to pay benefits and will pay twenty percent (20%) of the regular salary. The twenty percent (20%) will be paid either near the end of the leave of absence when the teacher has confirmed plans to return to the employ of the School Association or in some other manner acceptable to the teacher and the School Association. The study project must receive Board approval, and the teacher on such leave may not be gainfully employed unless it is by mutual agreement in relation to the study project. Approved plans must satisfy the following conditions: a. Any full-time teacher must have worked for the School Association for at least seven (7) years. b. The teacher must return for at least two (2) years after the leave. If the teacher decides not to return as an Employee of the School Association, the Board must be notified by February 1st of the year of the leave. In this event the teacher will not receive the twenty percent (20%) salary referred to above and any amounts paid by the School Association for the teacher’s benefits will be repaid by the teacher. c. A suitable substitute must be available by April 15th prior to the commencement of the leave of absence and it is hereby agreed that the suitability of a substitute is contingent on that substitute being prepared to accept the position on a temporary basis, for the time period of the leave. d. The request must come before February 1st of the year preceding the school year for which the teacher is requesting a leave. e. The returning teacher will retain the accumulated sick days held prior to the leave. f. The returning teacher will be entitled to be paid at the point in the salary schedule to which his or her new qualifications (if any) entitle him or her but no increment will be paid for the year of leave. g. If the professional development allowance of that year has not been used, it may be applied to the study expenses incurred during the leave.
