Elementary Specialists. 1. SPS recognizes that specialists provide instruction at the elementary level which is beneficial to the instructional program. 2. In order to provide increased specialization in physical education, music, or other subject matter areas at the elementary level, while at the same time providing for quality program and schedule flexibility, Elementary Specialists and Elementary Specialists assigned to K-8 schools will be assigned no more than (40) sections per week to provide for the 160 minutes per week, allocated to classroom teachers as Preparation-Conference-Planning (PCP). If a school provides more planning time for classroom teachers, the cost of doing so is the responsibility of the building. 3. To promote equity between classroom teachers and Elementary Specialists, class size for Elementary Specialists shall be subject to the same limits as for all other classroom teachers as specified in Article IX, Section D,3, d of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 4. When creating building schedules, schools must give consideration to the daily schedule of the Elementary Specialist including Preparation-Conference-Planning time and recess, if applicable. The specialists will be involved in the scheduling of classes and their PCP and the specialists and administrator should strive to achieve consensus. 5. Elementary Specialists will work with the principal to develop a schedule that includes a sufficient amount of passing time between classes.

Elementary Specialists. When individual classes are six (6) students over the target at K-3 grade level or 4-5 grade level, the employee is eligible for relief, calculated at $10.00 per day for the six (6) students overload; for each student over six (6) students, add $2.00 per class per day (Example – eight (8) students over target level in one section calculates at $14.00 per day).

Elementary Specialists. To the extent possible music and PE schedules shall be created so that each classroom will receive the same educator for all sessions during the week.
Elementary Specialists. Standard staffing procedures call for one elementary homeroom per specialist class period. The parties recognize, however, that circumstances may exist, due to limited facilities and/or scheduling possibilities, which require the District to schedule more than one homeroom per elementary specialist class. Specialist teaching a combined class containing forty (40) or more students for an extended period of time (more than five (5) days) will be assigned an additional licensed teacher. Exceptions to this provision include elementary band classes. Any teacher teaching combined classes on a temporary basis will receive a prep substitution stipend.
Elementary Specialists. The District and Federation recognize that our elementary specialists deliver curriculum and services to our students in a variety of content areas that are vital to educating the whole child. It is the administrator’s responsibility to ensure that all teachers get a 50 minute preparation period and the appropriate materials required to instruct students. For these reasons, the parties have agreed to the following: 1. During opening week, elementary specialists will submit to their principals a supply list with costs attached to resupply the curriculum materials required for instruction of their content. A. For each individual specialist, a minimum $100 will be budgeted for classroom expenses. Should additional required curricular materials be needed during the year, the teacher can submit a supplemental list to the principal for ordering. 2. To effectively fund innovation the Office of Fund Development will organize opportunities for staff to seek additional/external resources. SPPS and SPFE will work collaboratively to identify a reasonable list of viable sources of revenue. 3. In accordance with the adopted “District/Department PLC Offerings for SY17-18” Teacher Development and Evaluation agreements; Principals/supervisors should have a meaningful discussion with each educator about which PLC would be the most productive for the educator and their professional growth in their content area that will impact student learning. a. Elementary specialists may attend a PLC in their content area, instead of a school level PLC with prior approval from their principal/supervisor. If disagreements arise, the teacher should immediately contact the district content lead to resolve. b. Specialists are excused from two of the maximum of four principal directed meetings per month to compensate for attending a district PLC. 4. Prep periods for specialists will not be split into more than two sections or be provided in increments of less than 25 minutes. 5. If district-wide PD is being offered in the specialist’s content area on a district professional development day, the specialist may be permitted to attend that PD in lieu of building PD, with prior approval from their principal/supervisor. Elementary Specialists. Elementary Art, Physical Education, World Language and Music Specialists shall be assigned a maximum number of 290 minutes of student contact time per day. Specialists will receive the same amount of prep-time as other licensed teachers. In addition, one (1) ten (10) minute break per day shall be provided between scheduled classes. Number of class periods and length of time will be agreed upon by the specialists and principals within the framework described in this section.

Elementary Specialists. Job sharing leave requests from elementary specialists will be reviewed by the Superintendent on a case-by-case basis. Inability to meet fair hiring practices, avoiding a Reduction in Force (RIF), or finding a suitable partner and/or leave replacement teacher may result in denial of application.
