Hash. The term hash is a term for a mathematical function in the context of cryptocurrencies. With this, a variable amount of data is reduced to a specific value. This calculated value can be used to validate data; even if the data are changed only minimally, the hash value is no longer consistent and the system provides notification of this accordingly. Hash rate The term hash rate refers to the unit of measurement for the computing power of the entire network for bitcoins. This means that the hash rate indicates how many calculations can be made in one second. For security reasons, these calculations are important for the functioning of the bitcoin network. For example, if the network's hash rate is 12 TH/s, 12 trillion calculations are made every second. Consensus procedure The consensus procedure protects the blockchain from manipulation. It makes it impossible for users to use the same value multiple times, and thus prevents double-spending. So how does this procedure work? With the consensus procedure, network data is automatically exchanged when a transaction is to be booked. The transaction is validated and its value added to the existing blocks only once the majority of the connected nodes have signalled that the information within the block is identical. Cryptography Cryptography is the science of encryption. These days, the term is also commonly associated with the topic of information security, as it is used in areas such as banking and online retailing. Cryptography is used by Bitcoin to protect wallets and the blockchain. Cryptography thus prevents a user from spending bitcoins from another person's wallet. The blockchain is protected by cryptography against manipulation by users or external parties. Cryptocurrency Cryptocurrency is the collective term for the new and digital forms of currency. The term crypto currency is also used. Cryptocurrencies are a modern sub-form of fiat money, i.e. currencies that are not based on any material value. They owe their name to the underlying cryptography. This is used for cryptocurrencies in order to enable a secure digital and decentralised payment system. Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies can be created without the influence of institutions such as central banks or intermediaries.
