Highland Context. Like the rest of Scotland, the health of people living in Highland is improving. However, not everyone is reaping the benefits of these improvements and health outcomes are unequally distributed across Highland. While health has improved over time it has improved more rapidly in some areas than others. Across Highland there are groups of people whose experiences of good health are significantly worse than others and the health gap between the most affluent and most deprived areas has widened (DPH Annual report 2011). People in lower socio- economic groups are more likely to experience ill-health, spend longer periods of their lives suffering as a result of illness or disability and die earlier than people who are more advantaged.
