Leave of Absence and Free Transportation. Employees appointed or elected as salaried representatives of the employees shall, upon request, be granted leave of absence without pay while engaged. Cumulative Compensated Service for Union Representatives during the period of absence associated with their serving in an elected capacity, will be credited for the purposes of vacation entitlement should they revert to active service in a position governed by the Collective Agreement. Employees shall be granted free transportation in accordance with pass regulations, and leave of absence without pay to attend union and labour conventions and recognized labour educational seminars. Leave of absence for the President of each Regional Local from Council will be granted to attend Executive Council Board meetings up to (2) times per year. The request for leave of absence must be provided by the local chairperson or designated Representative to the employee's immediate supervisor with as much advance notification as possible, however no less than hours prior to the commencement of the leave of absence. Local Chairpersons or authorized committee members shall, upon request, be granted free transportation in accordance with pass regulations, and leave of absence without pay for the investigation, consideration and adjustment of grievances. Employees shall, upon request, be granted free transportation in accordance with pass regulations and leave of absence without pay to attend local Union general meetings or other Union meetings. Such leave of absence will be granted only when it will not interfere with the Company's business nor put the Company to additional expenses. Employees, at the discretion of the Company, may be granted leave of absence of up to three months, permission to be obtained in writing. Leave of absence may be extended by application in writing to the proper officer in ample time to receive permission or return to duty at the expiration of such leave. Unless such extension of leave of absence is granted or absolute proof is of bona fide sickness preventing such return, a registered letter will be sent to employees instructing them to report for an investigation, in connection with the unauthorized leave of absence. If within a period of three (3) months from the date of the letter they fail to report for duty and investigation, they shall forfeit their and their names shall be removed from the seniority list and the Local Chairperson shall be so informed. Leave of absence for educational purposes may be granted to employees in with the company's regulations. The designated Representative of the Union will be informed when such leaves are granted.
