Method Blank. A method blank is an analyte -free matrix to which reagents are added in the xxx e volumes or proportions as used in sample processing. The method blank is carried through the complete sample preparation and analytical procedure and is used to assess possible contamination resulting from the analytical process. A method blank shall be included in every analytical batch. The presence of analytes in a method blank at concentrations greater than the MDL indicates the need for further assessment of the data. The source of contamination should be investigated , and measures should be taken to correct, minimize, or eliminate the problem if the concentration exceeds one -half the reporting limit . For common laboratory contaminants (e.g., methylene chloride, acetone, phthalates), the method blank must not exceed the reporting limit . No analytical data shall be corrected for the presence of analytes in blanks. When an analyte is detected in the method blank and in the associated samples and corrective actions are not performed or are ineffective, the appropriat e flag, as described in Section 5.0, shall be applied to the sample results.
