Salt Storage SALT STORAGE. OBJECTIVE All de-icing chemicals shall be stored inside proper storage structures so as to minimize loss of salt to the environment. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATION If not properly stored, de-icing chemicals can be lost to the environment in large quantities because of exposure to precipitation and wind. This loss can be costly due to that actual loss of salt, and can lead to environmental damage. CURRENT SITUATION 100% of sites where salt is stored has the salt placed inside structures. 100% of sites storage is on impermeable pads for County owned sites. 12 of the 14 sites have loading pads. 100% of the sites are graded to ensure that water runs away from the storage structure. None of our sites have indoor loading for spreaders GOAL Since the Fall of 2003 all salt and sand/salt blends are stored inside buildings on impermeable floors. All new maintenance facilities are to be designed in accordance with the principles set out in TAC’s Code of Practice for Design and Operation of Maintenance Yards.
