Systems and Systems-­‐of-­‐Systems Concepts. System and System Boundary A system is regarded as an entity that interacts with other entities, including hardware, software, humans and the physical world 1 . INCOSE defines a system as “a combination of interacting elements organized to achieve one more stated purposes”2 ISO15288:2008 treats systems primarily as entities that are constructed. Systems are “man-made, created and utilized to provide products and/or services in defined environments for the benefit of users and other stakeholders … The perception and definition of a particular system, its architecture and its system elements depend on an observer’s interests and responsibilities.” 3 All three definitions emphasise the importance of the system boundary being defined. A system’s environment is everything outside its designated boundary. The system boundary is the common frontier between the system and its environment; the definition of the system boundary is application-specific. The environment provides stimuli to the system and the resulting behaviour of the system is termed its response. Environmental stimuli include those related to normal functioning of the system as
