Tenure and Rank. The granting of tenure reflects a long-term commitment of the university to faculty members based upon their expected future contributions to the university, its students and other constituents. The most important predictor of future success is past performance. Therefore, normally, the granting of tenure for assistant professors is also accompanied by promotion in rank. Applications and documentation for tenure and for promotion normally will be combined into one dossier.
