Terms and Concepts. Before proceeding more into this, the establishment of terminology definitions are necessary. Such definitions serve to facilitate comprehension and enhance the overall clarity and coherence of the following study contents. According to Xxxxxxx (2023) the agreement phenomena presents an interesting aspect of linguistic examination. In some cases, there are not many agreement opportunities in clauses and may therefore appear easy, but in other circumstances an agreement becomes more sophisticated with more than one alternative, for instance, “This family has/have lost everything”. Family in the example is one group of people but it contains more than one individual and therefore can take both have/has (Xxxxxxx 2023: 183). As mentioned before there are semantic agreement and syntactic agreement but Xxxxxxx also describes agreement hierarchy with four different principal which occur in target positions. In linguistic terms, Target (agreeing element) refers to attributive (adjective or noun), predicate (verb), relative pronoun, personal pronoun that harmonizes with nouns or phrases. This alignment typically occurs in terms of number, gender, or case, and is observed across various linguistic elements such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Conversely, the controller (element agreed with) is the entity that dictates the specific form assumed by the elements involved in the agreement. For instance, nouns exert control over the form taken by adjectives or verbs. Furthermore, Xxxxxxx (2023) points out that variations in agreement depends on more than one factor, but the most important are the controller and the target. In clauses a target agrees with its controller. The controller and the target must be flexible with two ways agreement because the existence of the two agreement possibilities does not depend only on the controller, but even the target according to Xxxxxxx.
