General Linguistic theory and background. There are more than seven thousand languages, each characterized by its own unique features. Haspelmath (2020: 347-48) explains, languages show differences in structural aspects, including both grammatical and semantic dimensions. Different languages also differ in the form of their words and morphemes. He also underscores, each language constitutes a distinct set of conventions specific to its linguistic settings, and so each language should be described in its own terms. But at the same time, there are major principles, concepts and frameworks that can form the basis for studying different languages and their various components. One concept is agreement, according to Haspelmath (2020) agreement is a grammatical phenomenon where certain words in a sentence, usually verbs, change their form based on the properties of other words in the sentence, typically nouns. This change is to ensure grammatical coherence and can involve categories such as gender and number. Agreement is, clearly, a way to show syntactic relationships and dependencies between different parts of a sentence. Xxxxxxxxxx also describes that word order is a crucial aspect of syntax, as it affects how information is structured and understood in a sentence. Different languages employ different strategies to indicate relationships between sentence elements, and word order plays a key role in this regard. Xxxxxxx (1983: 1) for instance gives two English sentences below (11 and 12).
