Time for Vacations. In the absence of a departmental seniority agreement, the time for vacation shall be determined by the appointing authority after due consideration of employee convenience and administrative requirements.
Time for Vacations. Beginning on the first day of January of each year, the Barrington Fire Department shall post a vacation list and each employee according to the provisions of Section 2 of this ARTICLE XII shall select his first eight (8) days of vacation at any time during that calendar year; provided, however, that vacations during the period of May 1 to September 30 shall be in eight (8) working day periods. The selection process for the first eight (8) days of vacation shall commence by February 1 of each year and each employee in accordance with his seniority will have seven (7) days to select his first eight (8) days of vacation. If an employee fails to select his first eight (8) days of vacation according to his seniority, he shall automatically forfeit this first round pick. Upon completion of selection of up to eight (8) days of vacation, the same procedure shall apply for the selection of any or all remaining time. Upon completion of this second round of vacation picks, any remaining vacation time may be selected at any time in the calendar year, on a first come first served basis, with a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours' notice. Employees shall be allowed to cancel selected vacation days at any time with twenty-four (24) hours' notice. Irrespective of the above, any employee may select vacation prior to completion of the selection process, for vacation during the time the selection process is in progress, by polling the other members of his platoon as to the availability of the day(s) in question.
Time for Vacations. ‌ 1. Vacation time earned during one (1) full year of service may be used throughout the following year of service. A sergeant ▇▇▇, therefore, “carry over” all days earned during one (1) year of service into the next year of service, except as allowed under Section 2 below. 2. Any full-time sergeant covered by this agreement may not have more vacation accumulated than what the sergeant would earn in two (2) years at the sergeant’s anniversary date. In the event that an effected sergeant has in excess of the maximum amount of accumulated vacation at the sergeant’s anniversary date, said vacation time shall be reduced to the maximum allowable accumulation amount. 3. No payment in lieu of vacation time taken will be made except as provided at the time of resignation or unless the excess vacation accumulation occurred because the sergeant was asked to postpone previously scheduled vacation by his Chief of Police/supervisor. Any such vacation payment shall require a written application for payment, signed by the respective Chief of Police, which specifically defines the circumstances that necessitated its usage and that only the amount of vacation time which was actually postponed at the City's request will be eligible for payment. 4. Sergeants may use earned vacation time, held time, and personal time to schedule up to a maximum of thirty (30) days leave prior to his date of retirement, provided the sergeant gives the Chief of Police or his designee ninety (90) days’ written notice of his retirement with the condition that his last day worked and his retirement date are both irrevocable. Utilization of vacation time prior to retirement must follow the provisions of Section 9.4. During this time off, the sergeant will not be able to accumulate any additional vacation time, held time, personal time, or sick time. Any vacation time, held time, personal time, or sick time remaining after the sergeant’s retirement date will be paid out according to the applicable section of the contract or applicable law. Absent ninety (90) days prior notice as required by this section, a sergeant may not utilize accumulated vacation time to extend creditable service. If any sergeant attempts to use vacation time to extend creditable service without giving proper notice (90 days), the Union, City, and sergeants agree that the City shall report to the Pension Board the employee’s seniority based on his last day of actual work prior to the vacation.

Time for Vacations. A vacation shutdown will normally take place during the first week, or the first two weeks, of July of each year. If the Company determines to schedule employees for maintenance work during such vacation shutdown, employees not eligible for a paid vacation will be given preference for such maintenance work in order of seniority. Employees entitled to one and two weeks' vacation will take their vacation during the shutdown period. Employees entitled to more than two weeks' vacation will advise the Company not later than the preceding May 15 when they wish to schedule their additional week or weeks of vacation after July l. The Company shall be entitled to determine the number of employees who may be on vacation at any one time. Employees entitled to more than one week's vacation may receive pay for all vacation in excess of one week in lieu of vacation if they so desire. If at any time the Company determines there will be no vacation shutdown, it will notify employees by April l. Vacations may then be scheduled at any time during the year following June l. The Company shall have the right to determine the number of employees who may be absent on vacation at any one time. In case excessive requests are made for any one period, preference shall be given on the basis of seniority. Any employee with more than two (2) weeks' vacation can take one (1)week one (1)day at a time, subject to mutual agreement between the Company and the employee.
