Common use of Union Shop Clause in Contracts

Union Shop. 4.01 The Employer agrees to retain in its employ within the bargaining unit as outlined in Section 1 of this Agreement, only members of the Union in good standing. The Employer shall be free to hire or rehire employees who are not members of the Union, provided said non-members, whether part-time or full-time, shall make application on the official membership application form within ten (10) calendar days from the date of hire or rehire and become members within thirty (30) calendar days. The term "hired or rehired" shall not apply to employees who are on layoff. 4.02 The Employer agrees to provide each new employee and rehired employee, at the time of employment, with a form letter supplied by the Union, outlining to the employee their responsibility in regard to the payment of Union dues and initiation fees. 4.03 The Employer agrees to forward Exhibit One, sample attached to this Agreement, duly completed, to the Union within fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of hire or rehire of the employee. The Union shall bear the expense of printing and mailing the letter, the contents to be such that it is acceptable to the Employer. 4.04 The Employer agrees to provide the Union once a month with a list containing the names and social insurance numbers of all employees who have terminated their employment during the previous month.

In consideration of the foregoing clause, the Union shall hold the Employer harmless with respect to any liability the Employer may incur as a result of such obligation.
