Using LNS to Prevent Chronic Malnutrition Sample Clauses

Using LNS to Prevent Chronic Malnutrition. The term LNS refers to a range of products in which vitamins and minerals are embedded in a fat-based food product, which is generally composed of vegetable fat, peanut paste, milk powder and sugar. Until recently, LNSs have primarily been used as RUTF for the treatment of XXX, for which they were shown to be very effective. Based on the success of RUTF in the treatment of XXX, additional LNSs have been developed for the prevention of chronic malnutrition, which have been shown in efficacy trials to improve the linear growth of children, prevent severe stunting, reduce iron deficiency anemia and enhance motor development when provided to children from 6 months of age for a period of six to 12 months. However, there are no data yet on the performance of LNS when provided in a programmatic setting. LNS Effectiveness Studies Building on work carried out in Project Year One, in Project Year Two, FANTA-2 will identify program settings in two countries (Guatemala and Bangladesh) where effectiveness studies on the impact of LNS for the prevention of chronic malnutrition in children could be carried out and develop preliminary research designs for each setting. FANTA-2 and the University of California at Xxxxx (UCD) will initiate acceptability and effectiveness studies in both countries. In Bangladesh, the effectiveness of LNS for the prevention of chronic malnutrition will be compared to the effectiveness of MNP used similarly. The potential benefit of maternal supplementation with LNS during pregnancy and lactation will also be investigated. In Guatemala, the effectiveness of LNS for the prevention of chronic malnutrition will be compared to no nutritional supplementation, provided in the context of a community-based GM program. Both effectiveness studies will evaluate the impact of the different approaches on nutrition, health and developmental outcomes and the relative and absolute cost and cost-effectiveness of each approach Poor growth and severe childhood stunting is very common in rural Malawi and elsewhere in Sub- Saharan Africa. To-date, few interventions have proven successful in promoting linear growth in early childhood. Preliminary results from Malawi suggest that a year-long daily complementary feeding of infants with a ready-to-use high-energy, micronutrient-fortified spread may markedly reduce the incidence
