Shellfish means the following species: Bay scallop (Argopecten irradians); Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis); Ocean quahog (Arctica islandica); Oyster (Crassostrea virginica); Quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria); Razor clam (Ensis directus); Sea clam (Spisula solidissima); Sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus); Soft shell clam (Mya arenaria).

The natural spawning seasons for the test species in the Puget Sound area are listed below (Ecology, 2008): • Crassostrea gigas (Pacific oyster) – summer • Mytilus galloprovincialis (Blue mussel) – late spring through early summer • Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Purple sea urchin) - December through April • Dendraster excentricus (Sand dollar) – April through October Final selection of the test organism will be made in consultation with the testing laboratory and the Ecology Project Manager.
Blue mussel, which accounts for 0.2% of overall aquaculture production, is the main shellfish species produced.
