Patient abandonment means withdrawing a patient from treatment without giving reasonable notice or providing a competent replacement provider.
Patient abandonment means a termination of the provider/patient relationship at a time when a continuous level of care is needed. Patient abandonment does not occur when a scene is unsecured, deteriorates or becomes too dangerous for the emergency medical care provider to safely function. Patient abandonment means the termination of a health care physician-patient relationship without the assurance that an equal or higher level of care meeting the assessed needs of the patient’s condition is present and available.
