Use or Lose definition

Use or Lose policy means that a grantee that does not "use" its grant award funds in a timely fashion will “lose” a portion of those funds as described below. The purpose of this adjustment action is to direct monies to those grantees most capable of making immediate productive use of available monies, and to demonstrate that funds appropriated by Congress for the HPF in fact are needed and being used promptly. The Use or Lose policy is intended to have these results:
Use or Lose. Vacation Accrual: Employees may carry-forward up to one (1) year of unused and accrued vacation time from one school year into the following school year. This carried- forward unused vacation time shall be referred to as “use or lose” vacation time. Employees may use “use or lose” vacation time in accordance with this Article of the collective bargaining agreement in the year into which it is carried- forward. However, any unused “use or lose” vacation time shall be lost at 11:59 p.m. on June 30 each year and shall not be carried-forward into another year. No “use or lose” vacation time may be cashed out except upon resignation or retirement.

Use or Lose leave must be used before the end of the leave year or it will be forfeited. All employees are responsible for scheduling "Use or Lose" leave in writing at least three pay periods in advance of the end of the leave year.
