Accessibility of Information. The “accessibility to deaf people” market is growing across Europe, and especially since some recent laws are enforcing companies to offer access to disabled people. Signing avatar technology promises interesting commercial applications, allowing companies to inform their deaf customers. The avatar technology is not designed to replace human sign language interpreters (and might not be able to). It is designed to act as a tool that eases the creation of repetitive and template-based sign-language sentences. It particularly fits to automatic vocal synthesis systems, offering the sign language complement. Multilingual aspect (direct translation from one sign language to another one) could be of interest when considering standardisation of information broadcast at an European or international level. Furthermore, no “quality label” of sign language exists. Being an emerging, but competitive market, customers might buy a signing avatar technology where the quality of displayed sign language is not sufficient, without being able to detect it. Works conducted on corpora within the DictaSign project could pave the way for the creation of an European sign language quality label, ensuring a competitive advantage for technology providers that adopt it and a maximum of quality for final users: deaf people.
