Anastomotic Leak Detection. It is widely agreed that an earlier detection and treatment of an anastomotic leak and confer survival and quality of life benefit to patients (39,239). What is not clear is what the best method to do this is (255), or if there is a reliable single method. There have been multiple attempts to create systems to improve the earlier detection of anastomotic and other septic complications. Within the post-operative period, there is a systemic response to having undergone an operation, which can lead to a wide variety of clinical and physiological responses.
