Common use of Appointment of Alternate Staff Chief Clause in Contracts

Appointment of Alternate Staff Chief. The Staff Chief Engineer may request the assignment of an Alternate Staff Chief Engineer on his/her vessel. This assignment will normally be filled in Chief Engineers’ seniority order from an approved list of qualified Alternate Staff Chief Engineer candidates. However, absent such assignment, there is no requirement to compensate any employee at the Alternate Staff Chief Engineer rate of pay. When the Employer designates an Alternate Staff Chief Engineer’s position(s), employees on an approved list may bid by Chief Engineer seniority for the open position. To qualify for placement on the approved list, employees must meet the following requirements: a. Submit a letter of interest with the Port Engineer’s office stating the reasons why he/she desires to be an Alternate Staff Chief Engineer. b. Provide a minimum of two (2) written references from current fleet Staff Chief Engineers, and c. Have no history of disciplinary action within the previous three (3) years. d. Chief Engineers currently serving in the position of Alternate Staff Chief Engineer, with no history of disciplinary action within the previous three
