CODATA. The Committee on Data (CODATA), part of the International Science Council (ICSU), seeks to xxxxxx global collaboration among different organisations, institutions and other relevant initiatives to advance open science and improve the availability and usability of data for all areas of research. CODATA actively promotes the advancement of interoperability and reuse of data with particular emphasis on the need for it to be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR). These core principles are well aligned with those of EPOS with regards to implementation of FAIR complaint data and services. There are a number of CODATA led initiatives where EPOS can potentially provide the solid Earth perspective to inform and guide development of international standards and best practices for data stewardship. Participation in these initiatives, including the IDAR-TG Task group that is addressing data access and reusability, will ensure EPOS is at the forefront of these developments. CODATA also has a leading role in the GEO data sharing efforts with particular emphasis on the activities necessary to implement the GEOSS Data Sharing Principles (DSPs) for data sharing across the GEO community, which is of direct relevance for the EPOS Delivery Framework (see section 2.1).

CODATA. CODATA, the Committee on Data for Science and Technology, is a committee under the International Council for Science (ICSU). CODATA was established for the collaboration and international cooperation for sharing expertise in materials research and education – especially among developed and developing countriesto advance scientific knowledge, to train the next generation of materials scientists, as well as to increase the numbers of highly skilled technical workers and materials professionals. It recognises the need for materials community to catch up with other scientific communities that are advancing their fields through modern informatics, such as the use of distributed systems of hardware, software, information bases, and expert systems as well as the exponential growth in computing power, communication bandwidth, and data storage capacity. CODATA (in a co-operation with VAMAS) also hosts a Working Group on the Description of Materials on the Nanoscale. The explosive interest in nanomaterials has resulted in a need for an internationally accepted system for describing them, especially with respect to the development of regulation, trade agreements, and international commerce. Recently CODATA and VAMAS have started an effort to develop a technology for describing materials on the nanoscale. They have started with the technology developed by ASTM E49 and are working from the perspective of the materials community. CODATA membership includes the following: National Members include scientific academies, research councils, scientific institutions or associations of such institutions that have activities in scientific data evaluation and compilation. Institutions effectively representing the range of such activities in a definite territory (such as a country) can be accepted as National Members.
