Data is the lowest level of abstraction, which is the signal without interpretation and processing we touch by the minute. Information is the next level, which is endowed by meaningful data. And finally, knowledge is the highest level among all three that can always be used to generate new information. For knowledge management, there are three main research areas including knowl- edge retrieval, knowledge representation and knowledge application. This section will introduce a number of prevalent theories and applications related to data and knowledge management and, more specifically, the development of semantic-based technologies.

The ability to rapidly collect, review, analyze, and communicate findings is essential for maximizing program results.
