Degradation of Aesthetics. An aesthetic impairment occurs when any substance in water produces a persistent objectionable deposit, unnatural color or turbidity, or unnatural odor (e.g. oil slick, surface scum) (emphasis added, IJC, 1989). For the Lake Erie LaMP process, the IJC listing criteria for evaluating aesthetic impairments in Lake Erie have been adopted with the following additions: • Whether an aesthetic problem is naturally occurring or man-made does not affect its potential designation as an impairment; • The fact that there is currently no known solution to an aesthetic problem does not affect its potential designation as an impairment.
