Design and Delivery of the First CDFF Element. Stage 1 provides for a permanent presence of four crew approximately 30 days after launch of Element 1. Element 1 is designed with a 15-year lifespan and consists of three integrated modules delivered to XXX on a single launch vehicle, as shown in Figure 2. To reduce development costs and schedule risk, the Habitat Modules (HM) derive from HALO and Cygnus structures and subsystems and are equipped as permanent crew habitat and cargo modules. The Service Module (SM) evolves from the Cygnus cargo resupply vehicle, with a larger structure and increased propellant capacity. The permanent modules are supplemented with additional space provided by Cygnus for long-term stays, short-term cargo, and visiting crew vehicles. Our free-flying CDFF operates at a mid-inclination orbit of 38° at an altitude of ~450 km to maximize use of international and U.S. launch facilities, such as NASA’s Xxxxxxx Space Center, FL, and Wallops Flight Facility, VA. Along with a permanent crew of four, Stage 1 provides for multiple internal and external payloads on both the permanent modules and the visiting long-term Cygnus cargo vehicles.
