Extension of Probationary Period for Tenure-Track Faculty. i. Any University approved leave of absence of one semester or more will automatically extend the probationary period for one year. A faculty member may also apply to the Department Chair and Xxxx for an extension of the probationary period for one year whenever the University approved leave is less than one semester but at least two weeks. The Xxxxxxx shall decide whether or not to extend the probationary period in his or her discretion following consultation with the Xxxx, who in turn shall consult with the Chair. ii. Even if no leave of absence has been taken, a tenure-track faculty member may request an extension of the probationary period for the following reasons: (a) When he or she newly becomes a parent or legal guardian of a minor child during the probationary period. (b) When there are extenuating personal circumstances that may significantly impede the faculty member’s progress toward tenure such as serious personal illness or significant care giving responsibilities for an immediate family member due to major illness. “Immediate family member” shall include a child, spouse, civil union partner, or parent. (c) When there are extraordinary professional circumstances beyond the reasonable control of the faculty member. iii. If a faculty member originally appointed 1.0 FTE to a tenure-track position subsequently serves less than 1.0 FTE, the probationary period may also be extended. Such extension must be requested by the faculty member at least one year in advance of the expiration of the original probationary period and must be approved by the Chairperson, Xxxx and the Xxxxxxx. iv. No request for extension will be granted if a non-reappointment notice has been issued. v. A faculty member who receives an extended probationary period due to a University-approved leave of absence or other reasons delineated above shall not be under additional expectations regarding consideration for tenure, nor shall the faculty member be penalized for requesting and receiving an extension of the probationary period. vi. All such probationary period extensions shall be memorialized in writing by the Xxxx.

(a) Any University University-approved leave of absence of one semester or more will automatically extend the probationary period for one year. A faculty member may also apply to the Department Chair and Xxxx Xxxxxxx for an extension of the probationary period for one year whenever the University University-approved leave is less than one semester but at least two weeks. The Xxxxxxx shall decide whether or not to extend the probationary period in his or his/her discretion following consultation discretion. (b) A non-tenured faculty member may extend the probationary period for one year to reflect the caregiving responsi- bilities associated with the Xxxx, who in turn shall consult with the Chair. ii. Even birth of a child or adoption of a child five years old or under even if no leave of absence has been taken. Requests to extend the probationary period for this reason must be made within the year following the birth or adoption of the child and prior to the beginning of the year in which the mandatory review for tenure must occur. The maximum amount of time that the probationary period can be extended for the birth of a child or adoption of a child five years old or under is one year. Requests to extend the probationary period made under the terms of this paragraph must be submitted to the Xxxx who shall forward the recommendation to the Xxxxxxx for action. Such requests will be granted. (c) Other than extensions granted under paragraph vii (b) above, a tenure-track faculty member may request apply to the Xxxxxxx for an extension of the probationary period for without having taken an approved leave only under extraordinary circumstances. In such cases, following discussions with the following reasons: (a) When he Chair and/or Xxxx, the Xxxxxxx shall decide whether or she newly becomes a parent or legal guardian of a minor child during not to extend the probationary periodperiod in his/her sole discretion. The Xxxxxxx shall notify the applicant within sixty (60) days of the request. (c) When there are extraordinary professional circumstances beyond the reasonable control of the faculty member. iii. If a faculty member originally appointed 1.0 FTE full time to a tenure-tenure track position subsequently serves less than 1.0 1.00 but at least .75 FTE, the probationary period may also be extended. Such extension must be requested by the faculty member at least one year in advance of the expiration of the original probationary period and must be approved by the Chairperson, Xxxx and the Xxxxxxx. iv. (e) No request for extension will be granted if a non-reappointment notice has been issued. Extension of the probationary period under section vii (a) (c or (d) would not normally be expected to extend beyond one year, although further extensions may be petitioned to the Xxxxxxx in the manner described above. In all cases of extensions of the probationary period, the maximum amount of time that the probationary period can be extended for any reason or combination of reasons is three years for an assistant professors and two years for an associate professor. v. (f) A faculty member who receives an extended probationary period due to a University-approved leave of absence or other reasons delineated above shall not be under additional expectations regarding consideration for tenure, tenure nor shall the faculty member be penalized for requesting and receiving an extension of the probationary period. vi. All such probationary period extensions shall be memorialized in writing by the Xxxx.
