Flexibility and continuous operation Sample Clauses

Flexibility and continuous operation. In the first experimental loop, many things were fixed and hard-coded: the ID of the different PEIS components, the names of the tuples, and the connectivities, i.e., which PEIS component subscribes to which tuple. Moreover, the entire system was brought up via Unix shell scripts, which launched all the needed PEIS components. This made the re-configuration of the system difficult and error prone. Also, if a component failed, often the safest way to bring the system back in operation was to restart the whole system from scratch. The PEIS Middleware include tools to ease the dynamic, run-time configuration and re-configuration of the whole system, namely, the meta-tuples mechanism. It also includes tools to automatically start, monitor and restart each one of its components, namely, the peisinit. These tools have not been used in the first experimental loop because insufficient time was available in the workplan to systematic full system integration. This led to the following conclusions and recommendations. • System-level configuration and management should be done using general advanced tools, not by ad-hoc scripts. • A stronger effort should be devoted to the whole system design and integration. • The whole integrated Robot-Era system should undergo a phase of technical testing long before the experiments with elderly subjects begin.
