Gear Restrictions. The SHS3 Board may institute spatial or temporal gear restrictions to slow down the catch rate of certain allocated stocks.

While it is anticipated that Sector members will fish primarily with otter trawls and sink gillnets, Participating Vessel may fish for Groundfish with any legal gear including hook and line gear (demersal longlines, automated hook, jigs, and handlines), Scottish seines, beam trawls and pots. All Participating Vessels are subject to the same gear restrictions, such as marking, tagging, mesh size, and number of gillnets, applicable to common pool vessels using the same type of gear.

The Board reserves the right to prohibit other fishing activities by Members if it determines that those activities undermine or compromise the Plan and the Sector or otherwise conflict with the standards and ethics described in the bylaws and guiding principles.

Gear Restrictions. No Participating Vessel may fish for GB cod with any gear other than jigs, non-automated demersal longline, handgear, or gillnets. While participating in the Georges Bank seasonal closure (May 1 through 31) vessels must use hook gear to target cod or other regulated species managed under the Plan. All Participating Vessels are subject to the same gear restrictions on marking, tagging, mesh size, and number of gillnets applicable to common pool vessels using the same type of gear. In addition, when fishing with hooks all hooks must be 12/0 circle hooks. A “circle hook” is defined as a hook with the point turned back towards the shank and the barbed end of the hook is displaced (offset) relative to the parallel plane of the eyed-end, or shank of the hook when laid on its side.
