Habitat Evaluation Guide. The HEG is a rapid assessment method to assess site condition or LEPC habitat quality (0 to 1) based on four variables: a) Vegetation Cover - Non-overlapping canopy cover of herbaceous plants and woody shrubs within evaluation unit. b) Vegetative composition—Relative vegetative cover of preferred grasses and shrubs including little bluestem, sideoats grama, big bluestem, Indian grass, sand bluestem, switchgrass, sand sagebrush, and sand shinnery oak. c) Presence of Tall Woody Plants - Greater than 3 feet in height. d) Availability of potential habitat – Proportion of area within a 1 mile radius in grass cover with <1% canopy cover of trees >3 ft. in height.
