Illness or Injury Extended Leave. A. When a certificated employee is absent from employment in excess of twelve (12) days in a school year due to illness or injury, the certificated employee shall be eligible for up to five (5) additional months sick leave during which the amount deducted from the salary due the employee for any school month in which the absence occurs, shall not exceed the sum paid to the substitute employed to fill the position during the absence, or if no substitute employee was hired, the amount which would have been paid to a substitute employee. The five (5) months extended leave shall, after utilization of the 12 earned sick leave days for the year, run concurrently with any sick leave accumulated and carried forward from previous years. Employees shall exhaust FMLA leave during the period he/she is exhausting leave under this section for his/her own serious health condition.
