In this case, the doctoral candidate must meet the following requirements: i. During the period of study leading to the doctoral degree, the doctoral candidate must have spent at least three months at a respected higher education institution or research centre outside Spain to complete courses or do research work. The stays and activities carried out must be endorsed by the thesis supervisor and authorised by the academic committee of the programme. The candidate must provide a certifying document issued by the person responsible for the research group of the body or bodies where the stay or activity was completed. This information will be added to the doctoral student’s activity report. ii. Part of the thesis (at least the summary and conclusions) must be written and presented in one of the languages commonly used for science communication in the relevant field of knowledge, which must not be an official language of Spain. This rule does not apply to stays and reports in Spanish or to experts from Spanish-speaking countries. xxx. Xx least two PhD-holding experts belonging to a higher education institution or research centre outside Spain must have issued officially certified reports on the thesis. iv. The thesis examination committee must include at least one PhD-holding expert from a higher education or research institution outside Spain who was not responsible for a stay abroad by the candidate (point [i] above). v. The thesis defence must take place on UPC premises or, in the case of joint programmes, at the location specified in the collaboration agreement.

International Doctorate mention. 1. The mention of ‘International doctor’ can be included in the doctoral degree certificate, provided that the following conditions are met: a. That during their mandatory training period for the attainment of a PhD, the doctoral student has stayed for at least 3 months (in one or more periods) in a foreign higher education institution or a renowned research centre, undertaking studies or research work. If these three months are separated into different stays, no stay lasting less than one month will be accepted for the purpose of calculating the 3 months required. The stay(s) and activities must be endorsed by the supervisor(s) and authorised by the academic committee responsible for the doctoral programme, and be incorporated into the doctoral activities document. This stay or stays will be accredited through a document issued to that effect by the recipient institution and signed by the person in charge of the stay at the foreign institution. b. That at least the summary and the conclusions of the thesis have been drawn up and defended in one of the languages habitually used for scientific communication in its specific field of knowledge, different from any of the official languages in Spain. This rule is not applicable when the stay(s), reports and experts are from a Spanish-speaking country. c. That at least two expert doctors linked to a foreign higher education institution or research institute have issued a report on the thesis. d. That at least one expert with the title of doctor and linked to a foreign higher education institution or research institute, and different from the person in charge of the stay mentioned in letter a) has been part of the viva panel. 2. The thesis defence must be carried out at the Spanish university in which the doctoral candidate is registered, or, in the case of joint doctoral programmes, at any of the universities involved or in the terms set in the collaboration agreement. 3. The application for the International doctorate mention will be carried out at the time when the PhD certificate is requested. The person concerned will submit the documentation accrediting the circumstances described in the first section of this article, where appropriate. The accreditation for the condition referred to in letter b) will consist in a certificate issued by the secretary of the viva panel of the doctoral thesis. 4. The EDUIB will decide on the awarding of the International doctorate mention.
