Priority Three. Early Years and Sure Start Xxxxxx has been very successful in developing places for three and four year olds and has secured more new childcare places than targeted. Work on developing a new Children’s Centre is being co-ordinated with our Wave 6 local Sure Start programme and a new primary school. We have an LEA nursery school which is a centre of excellence. Outcomes: • Sure Start Performance targets • Improved attainment in the Foundation Stage • Achievement of local Sure Start programme targets LEA contribution: • Provision of sufficient places for three and four year olds to meet demand • Support for early education and childcare providers so that they continue to provide a good quality serviceDevelopment of a Children’s Centre in co-ordination with the local Sure Start programme • Encourage the development of extended schools • Delivery of Education Development Plan Activities • Provision of professional expertise to support under-performing early years providers across all sectors DfES contribution: • General Sure Start Grant and regular contact with the relevant Sure Start regional team • Facilitating access to support in business planning, Foundation Stage developments, CIS development, out of school programme, workforce development and nursery school development • Early Years Standards Fund Priority Four: Extending Opportunities 14-19 Xxxxxx considers the 14-19 age range to be a continuum. It has identified this age range as one of its priorities in the Education Development Plan 2002 -2007. We look to reduce barriers to learning through increasing access and identifying routeways for progression. Students perform well at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and the stay-on rate post-16 is high, however, there is a long tail of underachievement. Specific programmes are being developed to counter this. The curriculum offer in some post-16 provision is narrow and there is increasing collaboration between schools and between schools and colleges to work jointly. This work is strongly supported by the Xxxxxx Post-14 Learning Partnership. The support that the LEA gives 14-19 education has been acknowledged in the recent Ofsted thematic inspection. There are 6 specialists colleges in the secondary sector with the LEA playing a co-ordinating role.
