Radiation Exposure to the Human Population. Objectives: The potential hazards associated with ionizing radiation were recognised soon after the discovery of X-rays by Roentgen in 1895 and of radioactive materials by Bequerel in 1896. One of the earliest published records of radiation injury was by Xxxxxx Xxxxxx, who reported that he and an assistant suffered severe smarting of the eyes after working with an X-ray tube. Since then radiological and epidemiological research has led to the development of radiation protection standards, which take age, gender and type of exposed tissue into consideration. The effect of ionizing radiation on the biologic system is often not predictable and this is related to several factors among which are total radiation dose, dose rate, radiation quality and several other environmental factors. Research has also been concerned with genetic (heritable) as well as somatic effects. The following section will compare various sources of radiation, discuss the effects on humans and the response of body tissues and organs to ionizing radiation. On completion of this section you will be able to:  Identify various sources of radiation to which the general population is exposed.  Describe the somatic effects of radiation exposure to specific body organs.  Describe differences between deterministic and stochastic effects  List body organs in increasing radiosensitivity by analysis of a list of tissue weighting factors  Explain the effects of ionizing radiation on a developing foetus.  Describe signs and symptoms of the prodromal radiation syndrome.
