Tissue weighting factors Sample Clauses

Tissue weighting factors. Some organs or tissue are more sensitive to radiation than others and will have an increased probability of developing stochastic effects. Also some cancers are more likely to result in death or serious problems than others. Hence, when determining the overall effect of ionizing radiation on humans, a factor known as the tissue weighting factor (wT) is applied. Basically, this factor takes into account the varying radiosensitivity of organs and tissues and the severity of the resulting cancer. The values for radiation weighting factors given in Table 5 have been recommended internationally in ICRP Report Number 103. The higher the value of the weighting factor, the greater is the probability of serious stochastic effects occurring following a specific exposure. Although different people respond to radiation doses differently the radiation weighting factors are approximated so that they can be applied to everybody. Note: The total of all radiation weighting factors for all tissues and organs adds up to give a whole body exposure factor of 1.
