Common use of Remediation of Teaching Deficiencies Clause in Contracts

Remediation of Teaching Deficiencies. If Oakton seeks not to reemploy on a permanent basis an adjunct faculty member who meets the unit membership criteria as defined in Article 1.1 of this Agreement in six of the last eight semesters (exclusive of the summer session) for failure to adequately perform Professional Responsibilities, Tutoring, Teaching and Related Tasks, Oakton shall notify the Adjunct Faculty Association and the adjunct faculty member of his/her teaching deficiencies and shall offer the adjunct faculty member an opportunity to remediate his or her teaching deficiencies prior to notice of termination. An unsatisfactory teaching performance shall be determined by Oakton, in its sole discretion, using factors such as student evaluation ratings, classroom observation, currency in subject matter, and/or other factors deemed appropriate by the College. An opportunity to remediate shall involve the following steps: (1) the adjunct faculty member and the Adjunct Faculty Association will be given specific guidelines on what teaching or tutoring behaviors need to be corrected and (2) assistance from the College will be specified, where appropriate. The adjunct faculty member will be given one subsequent semester (which can include summer) during which time Oakton shall evaluate the teaching or tutoring performance of the adjunct faculty member. If after such remediation the adjunct faculty member’s teaching or tutoring performance has not improved sufficiently in the sole opinion of Oakton, the adjunct faculty member shall not be re-employed. If the adjunct faculty member's teaching or tutoring performance has improved to a degree sufficient to allow the adjunct faculty member's continued employment at Oakton, in the sole opinion of Oakton, then the adjunct faculty member may be assigned courses in subsequent semesters in the usual and customary manner.

If Oakton the College seeks not to reemploy re-employ on a permanent basis an adjunct faculty member who meets a non-probationary Adjunct Faculty Member, the unit membership criteria as defined in Article 1.1 of this Agreement in six of the last eight semesters (exclusive of the summer session) for failure to adequately perform Professional Responsibilities, Tutoring, Teaching and Related Tasks, Oakton College shall notify the Adjunct Faculty Association Union and the adjunct faculty member Adjunct Faculty Member of his/her teaching deficiencies. If the College deems the deficiencies and to be non-remediable, the College shall offer make known these non-remediable deficiencies in writing. If the adjunct faculty member College deems the deficiencies to be remediable, the Adjunct Faculty Member shall be given an opportunity to remediate his or her teaching deficiencies prior to notice of termination. An unsatisfactory teaching performance shall be determined by Oakton, in its sole discretion, using factors such as student evaluation ratings, classroom observation, currency in subject matter, and/or other factors deemed appropriate by the College. An opportunity to remediate shall involve the following steps: (1) the adjunct faculty member Adjunct Faculty Member and the Adjunct Faculty Association Union will be given specific guidelines on what teaching or tutoring behaviors need to be corrected and specific expectations that must be met, (2) assistance from the College may provide will be specified, where appropriate. , and (3) the tools the College will use to determine if the deficiencies have been remedied (may include but are not limited to student evaluation ratings, classroom observation, currency in subject matter, etc.) The adjunct faculty member Adjunct Faculty Member will be given one (1) subsequent semester (which can shall not include summerthe summer semester) during which time Oakton the College shall evaluate the teaching or tutoring performance of the adjunct faculty memberAdjunct Faculty Member. If If, after such remediation period, the adjunct faculty member’s teaching or tutoring performance member has not improved sufficiently in successfully used the sole opinion of Oaktonspecific guidelines set forth by the College to remediate the identified teaching deficiencies and meet the identified expectations, the adjunct faculty member Adjunct Faculty Member shall not be re-employed. If the adjunct faculty member's Adjunct Faculty Member has successfully remediated the identified teaching or tutoring performance has improved to a degree sufficient to allow deficiencies and met the adjunct faculty member's identified expectations set forth by the College, the Adjunct Faculty Member shall enjoy continued employment at Oakton, in the sole opinion of Oakton, then the adjunct faculty member may College and be assigned courses in subsequent semesters in the usual and customary manner.
