Without Compensation. A leave of absence may be granted to a staff member for approved professional study at his/her own expense. Time spent in such study will be credited as experience on the salary schedule, provided an official transcript from such study is filed in the Superintendent’s Office. Such leave will be granted only after a minimum of two years’ service in the school system. A teacher on leave for professional study shall be returned to employment only at the beginning of the school year in September and then only if on or before April 1, the Assistant Superintendent – Human Resources and Operations was notified in writing of the intention to return. A teacher wishing to return during the school year may request to do so, but the request will be honored only if a suitable vacancy exists or occurs during the school year. If the request for early return is denied, the leave shall expire at the end of the school year in June, at which time the teacher shall be reassigned.
